What we do...
Youth for Christ and Crux Media have developed film school, a uniquely interactive educational opportunity primarily for students in Years 9, 10 and 11.

Everyone has a story to tell...
FILM SCHOOL is a week-long programme of workshops that teaches the basics of film-making whilst releasing each student’s creativity through story-telling.
Film School combines theoretical knowledge of Film Studies, practical hands-on experience of Film-Making, and opportunities for every student; to reflect on their lives, tell their own stories and work together to make their own short film.
Film theory
Through tapping into the current “Broadcast-Yourself” culture, these interactive workshops allow students to learn to analyze and engage with the medium of film in a new way. They will have the opportunity to watch and dissect elements of their favourite movies and take part in fun games and group activities, all the while discovering for themselves the rudiments of film theory. Models and concepts covered include Basic Media Theory, Props Character understanding Analysis, Bathes’ Study of Semiotics and Todorovs Equilibrium Theory.

Hands-on practical training
At Film School, students are trained in practical film-making, such as story-boarding, scripting, lighting, sound and camera-work. Students experience master-class style sessions with top-of-the-range camera, sound and lighting equipment, and every student has the opportunity to try these vocational skills for themselves as they create their own short film.
Telling their story
Everyone has a story to tell. Film School gives students an opportunity to reflect on their life’s story: Does it have a hero? A mission? A happy-ending? Is it even written yet? After contemplating and expressing their own individual stories, through class activities and “The Diary Room” they share ideas and begin to work in small groups to create their own short film. Every student takes part in the creation, planning, shooting and production process, and at the end of the course, the short film they have created will be theirs to keep. Furthermore, a special screening is arranged a few weeks after Film School, at which students can enjoy watching each other’s work.
